Africa's dazzling natural beauty has lured millions of people across the globe to its shores and captured the hearts of everyone that has visited. It has been proven that habitat destruction is the most important factor that is causing the extinction of many animal species. Without a decent, flourishing environment to live in animal life cannot exist.

With thousands of Africa's wildlife just vanishing off the face of the earth each year, we have compiled a list of the most endangered animals in Africa and where you can still go to see them in their natural habitats:

The Black Rhino

The black rhino is the most endangered animal in Africa and is ranked "critically endangered" due to extreme hunting and poaching due to the extreme demand for rhino horn in the world. At the moment there are quite a few Game Reserves that are still dedicated to saving the black rhino and although the numbers are falling fast, they are still there. Game Reserves in the KwaZulu Natal and Swaziland region, the Masai Mara Reserves and Kenya's Amboseli are the only places that you will have a good chance of spotting a black rhino. If some methods aren't taken into action to save the black rhino then Africa would be forced to remove this animal from The Big Five, as it will no longer exist anywhere in the world.

The African Elephant

The African elephant is another member of The Big Five that is slowly dying out. But even though endangered, there are some African parks where there is an influx of elephants and their numbers sometimes need to be controlled. Elephants can weigh over six tonnes and eat about 250kg a day, which results in extreme pressure on their environment. They are smart animals and are able to communicate with each other using sounds that humans cannot hear. You can see the African elephant in most game parks in South Africa.

The Mountain Zebra

Today the zebra is only found in a few Game Reserves; the Kruger National Park is where most people go to see the zebra. Other kinds of zebra like the Burchell's zebra and the Greyy zebra are more common and are found all over Southern Africa; you can distinguish the Mountain zebra from the res by their lack of "shadow stripes," which are faint stripes that run in between the black stripes, and their grid-like striped pattern just above their tails. The Mountain zebra gets along well with the wildebeest, elephant and impala and often mix with these species in Game Reserves.

The Cheetah

The Cheetah is renowned in the rest of the world as the fastest animal on earth, exceeding speeds of over 100 km/h. These endangered big cats can only be seen at the Kruger National Park in South Africa and at Etosha in Namibia to name but two. They are not very big animals and their sleek, slender build makes them easy to tell apart from a leopard. Because of the cheetah being a relatively small cat in comparison to other wild cats, their young are often preyed on by other big felines, and they are usually shot by farmers who fear for their livestock. Their petite body mass also counts against them as they have to compete with other predators for sustenance and these factors all play a role in the battling survival of the cheetah.

Chimpanzees

These cute primates live in groups of 120 and are not as critically endangered but their numbers are dwindling as a result of poaching and their natural habitat being threatened by deforestation. Chimpanzees live off mostly fruit and plants, and they find comfort in the shady areas of forests. With the increase of wildfires each year and the cutting down of trees for artificial purposes, the chimpanzees legacy is at stake. There are still a few chimps in Western Tanzania in Game Parks like Mahale Mountains National Park where you are able to see them in their natural habitat.

One other critically endangered animal is the Tiger. There are only 200 of them left in South Africa and that's only in captivity. They have completely died out in the wild and Game Reserves are battling to keep them alive and thriving but 200 is too small a number to be able to save the tiger from dying out. The harsh reality is that the next generation and generations after that will not be able to see a real tiger in its natural habitat. There are a few Game Reserves in Southern Africa that you can visit to see the big cats, so don't surpass this opportunity. Spend time with the endangered species of Africa, it might just be your last chance to see these beautiful creatures in alive and breathing and it will definitely be a memory you'd want to cherish forever.

The Asian Tiger

There are lakes you can fish on and then there is Lake Huron. Lake Huron fishing is some of the best in both the states and the world.

Here are some facts on Lake Huron. It is the 2nd largest of the Great Lakes of North America. This makes it the 3rd largest fresh water lake in the world. It spans 23,010 square miles, which makes it about the size of West Virginia. There are 3,827 miles of shoreline. The length of the lake is 206 miles and it is 183 miles wide. The average depth is 195 feet and the maximum depth is 750 feet. Like the other Great Lakes, melting glacial ice formed it.

Now, that is all very interesting, but the real question that occurs to most of us when we think about a really big lake is does it have really big fish? The answer is a resounding yes. Lake Huron Fishing is thriving again, but it has been a long hard environmental fight. When the first European explorers first wandered to its shores and named it after the local Indians, the lake was clean and teeming with native species of fish. As civilization spread along its shores, so did pollution.

The history of Lake Huron as a fishery has been a horror story of the effects of pollution and the mismanagement of our natural resources. It has also been an encouraging tale of what can be accomplished when sportsmen and environmentalists work together to restore and improve conditions. Today, Lake Huron is home not only to reviving natural species, but also many imported species as well. The Chinook salmon that is famous for its heroic journey up the rivers of the Northwest to their spawning grounds is one example.

There has been an active stocking program in Lake Huron for several years now. Chinook salmon are released into the lake after been raised in hatcheries. The fish thrives in the lake although they have not been able to reproduce as they have not been able to adapt their genetic spawning urge to Michigan and Canadian rivers. They still live for an average of over five years and grow to full adult size in the Lake.

Charter boats are available on both the American and Canadian sides of the Lake. The boats often specialize in finding the salmon. Although this is a true fishing experience, it is only one that is possible in Lake Huron. There are also large numbers of bass, walleye, pike, and musky to be found. Lake Huron fishing has been brought back from a critical point and is rapidly returning to its glory days. It is the responsibility of our society to not only protect our natural resources for our use, but to insure that they will be there for our grandchildren also. Halona Beach Cove is a small beach surrounded by steep cliffs in southeast Oahu. Because the only way to reach this place sitting to the right of the Halona Blowhole is to scale the cliffs, the beach is never crowded. But for those who have the daring and the stamina for hiking, the rocky cove is a delightful treat.

Halona Beach Cove has white sand and green waves protected from wind by its surrounding crags. Considered to be Sandy's identical beach, Halona is also known as "Pounders Beach" owing to the ocean waves that roll into the beach. However, Halona's gently sloping sand bottom prevents the waves from roughing up the beach. This results in mellow and calm waves in the protected area, and makes swimming within the protected area pleasurably safe. Don't swim, though, when the surfs are up, such as during winter months. At any season of the year, never swim outside of the protected area, though; the current is strong and the area is rocky.

Halona Beach Cove is most famous as a setting of the love scene in the 1953 movie, From Here to Eternity. In fact, the beach owes its nickname "Eternity Beach" from the movie. It's also nicknamed "the Peering Place;" people usually come to this place in order to view the Halona Blowhole. Honu (an endangered Hawaiian turtle specie) is a resident here. Though the turtles that frequent the beach are harmless, don't touch the turtles, though, or you'll be fined.

Clewiston, Florida - Lake Okeechobee and the Seminole Nation

Clewiston, Florida resides on the Southern shore of Lake Okeechobee, a lake enhanced by the US Army Corps of Engineers to provide water for Southern Florida. Previously the water flowed through the Everglades to the Gulf. Now it is stored in the lake, reducing the size of the Everglades, but giving fresh drinking water to the population and irrigation for the sugar cane, and citrus industries. Florida orange and grapefruit groves are not myths conjured up by the Tourism bureau. They do exist: as far as the eye can see in some places.

The Seminole Nation Reservation begins thirty or so miles South of Clewiston. The Ah Tah Thi Ki (Seminole for to learn, to remember) Museum on the reservation tries to preserve and protect the culture and traditions of the Seminole Nation through exhibits, movies, and extensive archives. It also features a 1.5-mile boardwalk trail through the Big Cypress swamp. More than fifty signs describe the various flora indigenous to the ecosystem and the ways the Seminole people used them. A ceremonial area and living village with craftsmen plying their trade are also found along the trail. The Seminoles fought two wars with the United States and never surrendered. Too bad that more emphasis about their victories was not touted at the museum. This would be another feather in their headdress.

The only restaurant nearby is at Billie's Swamp Tours, about three miles down the road. This is an attraction built to cater to the tourists. They offer swamp rides in land-based vehicles and swamp airboats. Of course, there are many more people at the swamp tours than the more educational museum. The restaurant is very nice, a little pricey, but worth the money spent. Try alligator tail nibblers (battered deep fried pieces), which are served with tartar sauce. They are pretty good; a little chewy, but edible.

Drive back to Clewiston through the sugar cane fields. They are a blight upon nature. They swallow the water of Lake Okeechobee, which should go to the drying Everglades. Smoke bellows from the stacks of the processing plants in Clewiston, polluting the air. The fertilizer used for the cane encourages the growth of cattails, which are an exotic species in Florida.

To see Lake Okeechobee you have to drive on top of the levee or dike. You cannot see the other shore. It is definitely a large lake. Today, 2008, the lake is in serious trouble. The levels are very low and the once great fishing has diminished.

What's So Fascinating About Guilin in China?

Guilin is one of China's premier tourist attractions. In Guilin, there are lovely parks, hills and peaks, lakes, rivers and limestone caves. The beautiful landscape of Guilin, which often appears in Chinese scroll paintings, is what captivates many visitors to this place. Guilin is famous for its karst peaks and the scenery of its hills and peaks fascinates many travellers as well as inspiring Chinese poets.

The karst peaks at Guilin are found throughout its city. Most of them are found along the Li River, at south of the town. How are those peaks formed? These are due to geological disruptions which occurred more than 300 million years ago. Limestone formations pushed through the sea bed and formed hills of exposed limestone. These hills were then eroded by wind and rain, and became "stone forests" and peaks of different shapes and sizes.

Guilin literally means "cassia tree forest". It was named after the local cassia or osmanthus trees, which are mainly found along the riverside of Binjiang Lu. The city is a busy spot with the usual bustling activities of a city. Being a popular tourist attraction, the city has souvenir stalls, ticket booths, shopping centres, specialty shops and large crowds. As the Li Jiang River cuts into the city, many restaurants around the region offer rive cuisines and seafood.

The Lakes, Rong Hu and Shan Hu, lie on either side of Zhongshan Lu, which runs through the heart of the town. The lakeshores have beautiful banyan and willow trees. In particular, on the shore of Rong Hu, there is an old banyan tree (about 800 years old), which gives the lake its name. Gu Nan Men, Guilin's South Gate, lies on the lake's northern shore. Shan Hu has two antique-looking pagodas, Riming Shuang Ta, and both are about 40m high.

The most well-known rock formation in the city is Xiangbi Shan (Elephant Trunk Hill). With a height of about 100m, it has a hole through one end which resembles the form of an elephant taking a drink from the Li River. Based on a local legend, an elephant belonging to an imperial convoy fell sick and was abandoned at the riverside by the emperor. After being nursed back to health by an elderly couple, the elephant refused to join the imperial convoy. This elephant was finally killed by the emperor and turned into a hill, where it now stands to this day. There is a small stupa at the top of the hill which is said to be the hilt of the emperor's sword protruding from the elephant's back. An old pagoda is located along the path to the summit.

Qixing Gongyuan (Seven Stars Park) lies at the eastern shore of the Li River. It is named after the four peaks of Putuo Hill and three peaks on Crescent Hill. Covering an area of about 2 sq km, it serves as a shelter for about 100 monkeys. There are few pavilions in this park. Crescent Hill is known for the many poems and commentaries carved into its overhangs. These old carvings are said to date back to the Tang dynasty. Putuo Hill has a 22-storey high Putuo Si and Qixing Yan (Seven Stars Cave). Luotuo Shan (Camel Hill) is located at the north of the park. The hill has the form of a single-humped camel in a sitting position.

As described above, Guilin is a beautiful place and is one of China's premier attractions. It has lovely parks, hills and peaks, and limestone caves. The South Shore Country Club, A Personal Perspective

On the south side of Chicago at 71st Street and Lake Michigan is an edifice that was known as the South Shore Country Club. In 1973 the club closed and sold its land and buildings to the City of Chicago which now has rename it the South Shore Cultural Center. This was the site of Barack and Michelle Obama's wedding reception in 1992.

As a third generation member of the club I would like to share some points of interest to those that have never been there. General information on the club with all pertinent dates can be found on the Internet, it is my intention to highlight the club from a personal perspective.

The South Shore Country Club was founded by the leading citizens of Chicago back in 1906. The hostess of the gala opening was none other than Bertha Honore Palmer. Since I was not around in that time I cannot speak about the club personally, however, I would like to make one reference to the former main building which later was moved and became the golf club house and famous "birdcage". This structure was of a very grand design and images of it can be seen in historic photos, if you study them carefully you will see that the interior of the main club house is the same as the current Palm Court of the Drake Hotel in downtown Chicago, Benjamin Marshall being the architect of both structures. The four pillars that form the center core of the Palm Court with the fountain in the middle and supporting beams from above come right out of the old main building of the South Shore Country Club. In 1924 this structure was moved and the current building became the main club house until its closing in 1973.

The interior splendor of the new club house is unsurpassed by any club house in the country, bar none. The central block of the club house has a grand salon extending from its east side over-looking Lake Michigan, this is called (and still is today) the solarium. On the north end of the great hall is the Main Dining Room that seats 400 people and has marble colonnades all around topped by two magnificent chandeliers and at the south end lies the grandiose Ballroom with colonnades all around the room meeting at the stage.

The main hall is two stories in height and a mezzanine surrounds it on all four sides. In the center there are three grand chandeliers that were given to the club by Clarence Darrow's wife as a gift. On the right side as you enter the building and just before you enter the main hall there was a guest registry table, above this fine wooden table hung a wonderful painting by Stark Davis of an exotic bird which sold at the private auction in 1973 for $1,100.00.

The interior decorating of the building was lavishly decorated and look much like something from Louis XIV at Versailles. Everything about the decor was elegant and refined. The taste of the place was never over done or garish and the rooms were all filled with light.

As a child much of my youth was spent there at the beach, for the club was built right on the lake. I can truly say that never in all of my years there until the clubs closing did I ever have a sad moment, the place always will hold a deep and lovely place in my heart.

Lake Tahoe is sprawling lake in the border between the US states of California and Nevada, which spans both the states. Situated in the valley of Sierra Nevada mountain range, Lake Tahoe basin is known for some of the best hiking spots in the United States. Even during the summer, the place is surrounded by the strange bedfellows of mist and bright sunshine, which provides a tailor-made environment for hiking. The river is surrounded by 74 acres of thick forest. Different varieties of bear species are abundant in this dense forest and a tourist is very likely to encounter some of the species. But almost all tourists will agree that hiking through Tahoe Rim Trail provide the best view of Lake Tahoe.

There are more than 135 trails and the best part is an 8-mile long trail that arches over Lake Tahoe between Kingsbury Grade and Star Lake. It is said that it will take several years for an incorrigible hiker to complete hiking in all the hiking trails in Lake Tahoe basin. Such is the number of hiking spots in Lake Tahoe basin that it can be safely declared that Lake Tahoe basin contains the most number of hiking spots per square kilometer in United States. The season begins from the second week of June. In the beginning of the season, the valley is particularly scenic, with wild flowers blooming in innocent abandon. But one should keep in mind that a wilderness permit from the state authorities should be obtained before embarking on a hiking trip.

Some of the must-hike hiking spots in the south shore of Lake Tahoe basin are Big Meadow and Frog & Winnemucca Lakes, each of which offers two miles of hiking stretch amidst a variety of flowers. In the east shore of the lake there is Marlette Lake, which offers five miles of hiking stretch and is filled with a variety of wild flowers. In the west shore, the 'flowery' hiking spots are Cascade Falls to Snow Lake, Eagle and Velma & Fontanillis Lakes, which are five miles long. In the north shore, one can hike through a sea of wild flowers in Donner Lake Area (two miles long), Donner Pass-Pacific Crest Trail, Mt. Rose (six miles long), and Squaw Valley (two miles long).

Some hiking stretches through the cliffs in Lake Tahoe basin are extremely difficult to engage in hiking. Such difficult trails in the south shore of Lake Tahoe include Moraine Trail (one mile long), Angora Lakes Trail (half mile), Tallac Historic Site (0.3 miles), Echo Lakes Trails (which provide a variety of trails of varying length), Glen Alpine Trail (two miles long), Clark Trail (1.6 miles long), and Mt. Tallac Trail (which provides strenuous hikes of varying lengths).

The North American B-25 Mitchell

Driving down New Highway, which skirts the perimeter of Farmingdale, Long Island's, Republic Airport, on the still-warm, crystal-blue Labor Day morning in 2006, and glimpsing the tails of the World War II B-24 Liberator, B-17 Flying Fortress, and B-25 Mitchell bombers, I had once again realized that the Collings Foundation's annual Wings of Freedom fleet rotation, more than any other year, had transformed the general aviation field into an early-1940s pocket of time, a hub of medium and heavy bomber operations.

The aircraft intended for my mission, the North American B-25 Mitchell registered 130669 "Tondelayo" and wearing its drab olive-green livery, had been the third parked on the ramp of the American Airpower Museum, both an historical and symbolic position relative to the two heavier, longer-range aircraft which had been preceded it.

Resulting from a 1938 Air Corps requirement for a twin-engined, medium-range bomber which could fulfill niche roles its larger, quad-engined counterparts had been unable to, and tracing its lineage to the B-10, the B-12, the B-18, and the B-23, the B-25 itself, named after the US Army Air Corps Officer General Billy Mitchell, had been infused life as a self-funded project by North American Aviation in the form of the NA-40-1. The 19,500-pound prototype, featuring a narrow fuselage with a green house cockpit; a straight mid-wing; two, 1,100-horsepower R-1830 piston engines; an angular, twin vertical tail; and a tricycle undercarriage of single wheels, had first flown in January of 1939, but a power deficiency had necessitated the retrofit of 1,350-horsepower R-2600s. Although the modified version, designated NA-40-2, had offered superior performance, it crashed after a two-week test program.

Its NA-62 successor, which had been extensively modified, featured a wider fuselage which in turn increased the now lower-mounted, constant root-to-tip dihedral mid-wing span, 1,700-horsepower R-2600-9 engines, square-geometry vertical tails, and a 27,000-pound gross weight. Approved in September of 1939, this version, designated the XB-25, first flew in prototype form on August 19 of the following year.

Initially delivered to the Army Air Corps, the aircraft demonstrated directional stability deficiencies, resulting in the outer wing mounting redesign with the tenth aircraft off the production line, which reduced the engine-to-wing tip dihedral and gave it its characteristic gull-wing profile.

The B-25 Mitchell, in production form, appeared with an aluminum alloy, semi-monocoque fuselage, constructed of four longerons, which produced a 53.6-foot overall length. The cantilever, all-metal, mid-mounted wings, comprised of a two-spar, fuselage-integral center section housing integral fuel tanks and two outer, single-spar sections with detachable wing tips, featured sealed ailerons with both fixed and controllable trimming tabs and dual-section, hydraulically-operated, trailing edge slotted flaps divided by the engine nacelles. Spanning 67.7 feet, they sported a 609.8-square-foot area. Powered by two 1,700-horsepower, Wright-Cyclone two-row, 14-cylinder, air-cooled R-2600 piston engines housed in aerodynamic nacelles which traversed the wing chord and turned three-bladed, constant-speed, 12.7-foot, full-feathering, anti-icing Hamilton Standard propellers, the aircraft could climb to 15,000 feet in 11.3 minutes and attain a maximum speed of 303 mph at 13,000 feet. The cantilever twin vertical fins and rudders, fitted with fixed and controllable trimming tabs, had been modified with rounded tops and yielded a 16.5-foot aircraft height. The tricycle, single-wheeled, hydraulically-actuated, aft-retracting undercarriage, the first such configuration employed by a US bomber, featured aerodynamic door covers over all three wheel wells in both the extended and retracted positions, while the main wheels were equipped with hydraulic brakes. The aircraft, with a 21,100-pound empty weight, had a maximum gross weight of 33,500 pounds.

Several versions had been produced. The first of these, the B-25A, incorporated pilot armor and self-sealing fuel tanks, while its successor, the B-25B, introduced two electrically-operated Bendix turrets, each of which replaced the midship and tail guns and featured two.50 caliber machine guns. Entering service in 1941 with the 17th Bomb Group at McChord Field near Tacoma, Washington, the aircraft, whose production run totaled 120, also featured a separate photographic station between the upper turret and the tail and a shortened, 54.1-foot length.

Powered by two 1,700-horsepower Wright R-2600-13 engines, the B-25C, the third version, introduced an autopilot system and external racks which could carry eight 250-pound bombs, and a later fuel capacity increase to 1,100 gallons. Of the 3,909 build, 1,619 had been produced in Inglewood, California, while 2,290 had been assembled in Kansas City, Kansas, under the B-25D designation.

The singular B-25E and -F variants were intended as test vehicles of wing and tail anti-icing systems, while the B-25G replaced the glazed nose with an armored one, the latter containing two.50 caliber machine guns and one 9.6-foot-long, 900-pound, cradle-mounted, M-4 cannon capable of firing 23-inch, 15-pound shells. Although its armament had otherwise adhered to the B-25C standard, its bomb bay could accommodate an aircraft torpedo. The variant, operated by a crew of four and featuring a 50.10-foot overall length, enjoyed a 405-unit production run.

The B-25H, with significantly increased armament, featured four.50 caliber machine guns in the metallic, armored nose, and a further four on the side, arranged in pairs; a repositioned top turret, now located in the roof of the navigator's compartment; the removal of the ventral turret; enlarged, aft-wing,.50 caliber machine gun waist positions; and a tail gun station with two further.50 caliber machine guns. As World War II's most extensively armed design, it could attain 293-mph speeds at 13,000 feet and had a 23,800-foot service ceiling.

The B-25J, the definitive and numerically most popular version, had been intended for precision bombing. The aircraft, introducing a bombardier who increased the crew complement to six, reincorporated the glazed nose which had now been provisioned with one fixed and one flexible.50 caliber machine gun. The largest single Mitchell order, for 4,318 B-25s, had been placed on April 14, 1943, and the aircraft, attaining 292-mph speeds at 14,500 feet, could cruise at service ceilings of 25,500 feet.

Between 1941 and 1945, the Army Air Corps took delivery of 9,816 B-25s, 3,218 of which had been produced in Inglewood, California, until 1943, and the remaining 6,608 of which had been produced in Kansas City.

The B-25 Mitchell had several post-war applications. Demilitarized, and designated TB-25, the type, based upon the B-25J, had been converted into a trainer with the installation of an observer's seat in the nose, ahead and below the cockpit; two student seats behind the standard two pilot-instructor positions; and up to five seats in the aft cabin. Of the 400 converted aircraft operated by the US Air Force during the 1950s, the last active-duty staff transport had not been retired until May 21, 1960, although it had continued to be operated by the air forces of Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Holland, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

A photographic reconnaissance variant, the F-10, had featured a nose-installed tri-metrogon camera along with other aerial photography equipment, while other non-military roles had included those of executive transport, freighter, and fire bomber.

The aircraft operating my Labor Day flight, a B-25J registered 44-28932, had been produced in August of 1944 by North American Aviation in Kansas City, Kansas. Accepted by the United States Army Air Corps on August 3 of that year, it had served in the US in the AAF Flying Training Command Program, serving 12 different air bases until January of 1959, at which time it had been declared surplus and had been deleted from the US Air Force inventory. Converted into a fire bomber, it had combated forest fires for another 25 years.

Acquired by the Collings Foundation in 1984, and restored by Tom Reilly Vintage Aircraft over a two-year period, the B-25J, the first World War II bomber in the collection, had been flown n air shows in the Boston area for a decade, whereafter it had been ferried to Chino, California, in late 2001, for a secondary restoration by Carl Scholl of Aero Trader, Inc. Subsequently repositioned to Midland, Texas, it was painted by AVSource West in its current Tondelayo livery after the B-25 which had been operated by the Air Apache 345th BG of the 5th Air Force in the Pacific Theater against targets in New Guinea, the 500th BS of the 5th Air Force itself having been the fourth squadron of the 345th BG to have attacked shipping in Vunapope near Rabaul on October 18, 1943. The Tondelayo name had been inspired by Hedy Lamarr's character in the 1943 movie White Cargo and given by the crew of Lieutenant Ralph Wallace. The three-aircraft formation, comprised of the B-25 "Snafu" and flown by Captain Lyle Anacker, the "Tondelayo" flown by Lieutenant Wallace himself, and the "Sorry Satchul" flown by Lieutenant Paterson, had claimed three ships, but avenging fighters had attacked "Sorry Satchul," hitting its port engine and forcing it to ditch, and "Tondelayo," damaging its right engine. Shut down and feathered, it had almost wrenched itself from its mountings because of severe vibration.

Flying over Cape Gazelle toward base, the B-25 duo, maintaining tight formation, had been targeted by some 50 Japanese fighters, "Sorry Satchul" so badly damaged that it had been forced to head for shore and ditch and "Tondelayo," despite its own critical wounds, hovering only 30 feet above the water where it had managed to shoot down five additional enemy aircraft. Limping into base at Kiriwina, the aircraft had subsequently been repaired and patched, receiving a new right wing, engine, propeller blades, and radio equipment. Its crew had been awarded the Silver Star.

Squatting under the forward fuselage and climbing the short ladder into the cockpit section on that Labor Day in 2006, I took the right of the two observer's seats located a foot below, and behind, the cockpit, while the four other passengers entered the aft section, located behind the bomb bay, through the ventral hatch, which had been configured with an aft-facing, three-person bench seat and three individual seats. With the ladder now raised and the dual panel folded across it to form a portion of the integral floor, the B-25J had been secured for engine start.

The two-person cockpit, sporting bow tie control yokes, featured a throttle quadrant with the two engine throttles angled toward the pilot, two propeller-pitch throttles, and two fuel-mixture throttles angled toward the copilot.

Engine start, commencing with the right, number 2 powerplant, entailed turning the master ignition switch and right booster pump on, at which point the Wright R-2600 powerplant rotated and the interior became saturated with deep, vibrating, Hamilton Standard propeller-created noise. Priming and stabilizing them with the throttle to create between 800 and 1,000 revolutions per minute, the captain applied a full-rich mixture, causing them to settle into a throaty, 1,200-rpm idle. The process was repeated with the left, number 1 engine.

Contacting Republic Ground on 121.6 for taxi clearance, and armed with the latest automatic terminal information service data, the twin-finned bomber released its brakes at 0845, the thrust created by its engines, even at idle settings, sufficient to move it forward over the American Airpower ramp and away from the World War II bomber trio. Taxiing parallel to the active runway, 32, the B-25J periodically jolted in response to brake applications, turning on to the run-up area by means of differential power, its slipstream-bombarded twin rudders aerodynamically inducing ground turns. Extending its slotted, trailing edge flaps and advancing its throttles, the medium-capacity bomber, assuredly a giant in comparison to the currently landing Piper Warrior, moved on to the runway's threshold, just as the B-17 had commenced its own taxi roll from the ramp.

Moving into take off position and aligning its nose wheel with the centerline, aircraft 130669 received take off clearance from Republic Tower on 125.2, slowly advancing its two throttles in order to establish initial directional control. Firmly maintaining a straight acceleration roll, the 1,500-horsepower twin-row radials powering the Collings Foundation aircraft exploded with cabin-saturating noise as smooth, steady throttle advancements pinnacled them into their METO settings of 2,600 revolutions-per-minute and 40 inches of manifold pressure. Counteracting wind-induced directional variations with subtle rudder deflections, the captain began applying control column back pressure at 75 knots indicated air speed, the now ground-separated nose wheel producing a lift-generating angle-of-attack. The air speed-created pressure differential, bathing the huge, outstretched, upper wing surfaces in a steady stream of accelerated air, removed all ground restraints and allowed them to peel the gravity-defying aircraft to which they had been attached off the ground at 115 knots. Retracting its tricycle undercarriage at the aircraft's VMC-determined 145-knot speed, and trimming itself into its initial climb, the twin-engined bomber, encased in engine slipstream, rolled into a right bank over Route 110, headed toward Long Island's south shore.

Maintaining a 150-degree heading, the now-graceful flying bird reduced its engine rpm to 2300 and its manifold pressure to 30, moving abreast of the metallic, erector set-appearing Captree Bridge at 1,000 feet, which stretched across the deep blue surface of the Great South Bay from the island to Jones Beach and its signature lighthouse. The azure of the water, seamlessly merging with that of the sky, melded into a surreal dimension, as viewed from the 270-degree-encompassing Plexiglas nose.

The power-to-weight ratio, coupled to its aerodynamic design, had been the key to the highly-maneuverable, medium mission bomber. Unlike its long-range, high-altitude, heavy B-17 and B-24 counterparts, the B-25, at half their acquisition costs, had been intended for interdiction purposes, delivering tactical blows to enemy targets closer to the front. Because of its maneuverability, it had been able to fly low-level, tree-top strafing sorties, where it had remained virtually hidden, and had then dropped parachute-retarding bombs, which had enabled it to escape before detonation. Although it had operated extensively in the Pacific, targeting Japanese air fields from treetop altitudes and skip-bombing enemy ships, it had been used in all theaters of operation, and had been flown by the Australians, the British, the Chinese, and the Dutch. It had been the first bomber to have been lend-leased to Russia.

The most famous B-25 mission, led by Lieutenant Colonel James H. Doolittle and occurring on April 18, 1942, had entailed the launch of 16 aircraft from the aircraft carrier USS Hornet. Of the four candidate aircraft, inclusive of the B-18, the B-23, the B-26, and the B-25 itself, the latter had been chosen because of its performance. The aircraft, B-25Bs modified at the Northwest Airlines maintenance facility in Minnesota to increase their fuel tankage from 694 to 1,141 US gallons, had featured dorsal and ventral power turrets, but had been devoid of tail armament. Loaded on the USS Hornet for the sea journey to Japan, 16 aircraft, each at 31,000-pound gross weights, would take off from the 467-foot deck at a 450-mile distance, close enough to permit them to bomb targets in Tokyo, Yokahama, Kobe, and Nagoya, yet retain sufficient fuel supplies to continue the 1,200 miles to China.

Encountering a Japanese picket boat during the morning of April 18, and fearing imminent attack, Doolittle made the decision to launch the B-25 fleet at an 800-mile distance, or 350 miles further, from land, the first take off occurring at 8:18 a.m., which had been less than an hour after the boat had been sighted. Using strong headwinds and the deck's sea swell-created inclination, the bombers had just been able to accomplish the precarious feat, with the last taking off at 9:21 a.m.

After some four hours of flying, the lead aircraft, flown by Doolittle himself, dropped the first bomb over Tokyo, shortly after which it had been joined by the remaining 15. Although all safely departed Japanese air space, insufficient fuel, caused by the earlier launching, and deteriorating weather, resulted in the crash-landing or abandonment of 15 B-25s in China, while the 16th landed in Vladivostock, where its crew had been captured.

Nevertheless, the mission had been both a technological and operational success, and had elevated troop morale and garnered tremendous notoriety for the aircraft.

Banking left to a 240-degree heading, aircraft 1306669 Tondelayo was carried back over Captree Bridge by its gull, variable-dihedral wings and its three-bladed propellers, crossing over Long Island's south shore. The B-17 Flying Fortress, appearing particularly graceful over the blue surface of the Great South Bay, flexed off of the port cockpit windows. World War II skies had somehow been resurrected that morning.

Fuel burn depended on engine setting: at 180 mph, with the engines turning at 1,700 revolutions per minute and feeding off of 27 inches of manifold pressure, the aircraft burned 120 gallons per hour, while a ten-mph cruise speed increase, attained with a 1,800-rpm/28-inch setting, resulted in a 130-gallon per hour consumption.

Recontacting Republic Tower, aircraft 130699 advised its intention of "inbound for landing" and reduced power, now gravity-induced into its descent profile. Maintaining a 180-mph speed and a 320-degree heading, it extended its trailing edge flaps, which provided air speed control, by means of progressive drag production. Flap settings equally depended on flight phase: 1/4 for take off, 1/2 and 3/4 for descent, and full for landing.

The aircraft's clean stalling speed had been 95 mph, which decreased to 83 mph at maximum gross weight with full flaps and undercarriage at 26,000 feet.

Extending its drag-producing landing gear into the slipstream, the aircraft inched toward Runway 32's threshold, as its altimeter unwound: 600 feet...500...300...100...

Passing over the fence at 115 mph, the olive-green, twin-engined, twin-finned medium bomber sank toward the blurred concrete in a full back-pressure control yoke-induced flare, screeching on the ground with its left main wheel at 80 mph, at which time the friction sufficiently reduced its air speed to permit the remaining two bogies to settle earthward.

Completing its deceleration roll and taxiing on to the American Airpower Museum ramp, the B-25J Mitchell, as the medium mission bomber, had appropriately been the first to return to base, the B-17 and the B-24 still plying the skies. If World War II had still been raging, the sequence would have been exactly the same.

The sub-tropical island of Bermuda is a real draw for sun lovers. It boasts some of the world's most truly stunning beaches. Are Uniforms a Good Way to Improve Student Discipline and Motivation?

The school uniform has a fairly short and somewhat chequered history. For all practical purposes, school uniforms as we know them today have their roots in the British public school system. For the sake of clarity, a British public school is equivalent to an American private school, and an American public school is equivalent to a British State school.

Up until the middle part of the 19th century, British public schools were the preserve of a wealthy elite, the later mandarins of the British Empire. Nevertheless, they were quite disorderly, with students behaving much as they wished. Uniform began to be introduced as a means of instilling a greater degree of discipline and team spirit, and rapidly gained acceptance within the public school system. Quite remarkably some of these uniforms still remain relatively unchanged today.

As is often the case, the middle classes - who would by tradition have sent their children to smaller, less exclusive, but still privately funded schools began to take up the fashion for school uniforms which had been adopted by their erstwhile social betters. In 1870, the Education Act made schooling for all compulsory for all in Britain, and many of the new state schools naturally adopted the sort of uniform policies which had been so eagerly embraced in the private system.

From that time, right through until the 1960's school uniform was practically universal in the United Kingdom.

The American experience is something of a contrast. School uniform (except in Catholic or parochial schools) was virtually unknown. Many schools had dress codes, which were exclusive rather than prescriptive. Blue jeans and high heels, for example might be banned, but pupils were not told what they must wear.

This is exactly the system that our proponent of school uniforms described as being started in her school at South Houston in the late 1950's, and to which she ascribes a subsequent significant improvement in discipline and grades.

In 1996, President Clinton instructed the then Secretary for Education Richard W Riley to send a Manual on School Uniforms to every School District in the country. The manual set out the Government's position, creating guidelines for all schools on which they could model their uniform requirements. The Government view was that the adoption of school uniform would reduce violence and indiscipline in schools, but did not go as far as making uniform mandatory, the decision being left to individual school districts.

The view of the Government was clearly not shared by parents, pupils or the school districts' administrators. By 1998, only 11% of Public Elementary Schools had adopted a uniform policy, and by 2000, that figure had only increased to 15.5%.

The decisions to adopt uniform were not consistent across the country.
Suburban schools had a relatively lower rate of uptake, perhaps reflecting the efforts of a more highly politicised group of parents.

The proponents on either side of the debate about school appear to have entrenched and almost polar opposite opinions, and there is a fog of statistics and counter-statistics available to support either proposition.

Are they in fact beneficial in improving discipline and motivation_ I believe so, and the experience at South Houston suggests that I am right!

The staff reported a considerable decrease in violence and indiscipline, and an average across the board increase of two grades in academic performance by the end of the year within which a uniform policy was introduced. Could it just be co-incidence? It seems hardly likely.

There is no doubt that when a school adopts a uniform policy, it is sending a clear and unequivocal message to parents and students alike. It is saying that this is an inclusive organisation where everyone is seen to be equal, and will be treated as such. School is about learning, not about showing off or scoring fashion points.

Some people would have us believe that children hate uniforms -indeed, many children will say so themselves, but the facts belie this opinion. Children, when they join an organisation with a uniform, just can't wait to get into it.

Most of us have an innate need to belong, to feel part of a group, to feel accepted and understood by our peers, and if possible to have their admiration and respect. This does not just apply to children; it applies to the members of your local chapter of Hell's Angels aware.

Of course, one of the obvious marks of a discrete group is its uniform.

When you provide a child with a uniform, you are giving him an instant key to acceptance within a group, the chance to belong to it and feel part of it.

Those who oppose uniform will say that by putting a child into uniform, you are taking away his constitutional right to freedom of expression. Nevertheless, isn't it interesting to note that left to themselves, children will to a greater or lesser degree choose a uniform of their own. These may not be identical in detail, but just look at any group of youngsters, and what do you see? Brand X shoes, Brand Y jeans, baseball hat on backwards - or droopy pants! So much for free expression!

According to Warren, "With over thirty years of decline in a basic understanding of, and standard for, what is acceptable in polite society, though, school uniforms may be what are required to try to restore to our kids some sense of dignity, self-respect, respect for education, and awareness of what's appropriate where." 1

The design of a uniform can be such that it does not preclude the expression of individuality by permitting the low key use of buttons and badges.

Furthermore, if students clearly see that they cannot express their individuality through wearing extreme styles of clothing, they are much more liable to try to do so through their achievements.

The wearing of uniform and identification with the group has some other subtle benefits which have been cleverly exploited by the military for centuries. Primarily, group membership and wearing of the uniform bring with them a sense of loyalty to the group. It is unacceptable to let the group down, or to bring it into disrepute. The same spirit that works in the infantry squad works in the classroom too - "together we can do it!"

It is curious therefore that many of those who prize individuality so highly fail to notice this highly observable phenomenon, without which our armed forces would be worse than useless.

A significant part of the psychology of group membership and identity is the feeling of security that comes from not being identifiably strange or 'different'.

It is well understood that in society and in school, the child who is 'different' is the one who is picked on, harassed or bullied. A well designed school uniform removes at least some of the visible signs of 'difference' immediately.
The Fort Wayne School Year says "Uniforms, with all students looking the same, can instill a sense of school togetherness. Just as a uniform solidifies a sports team or public service providers, such as police officers, it provides a link to others in your school community. That can make you feel like you're part of a bigger picture, rather than standing out in a big school." 2

There is also economic advantage to be gained from a uniform policy. Where a policy is in place, there is no longer the pressure on the parent to by the latest fad footwear for example, or whatever the accessory of the moment might be. For the pupil, the likelihood of being perceived as poor, or having unsuccessful parents is obviated, and the associated stigma avoided.

When the need to compete materially with fellow pupils is removed, the child's mind is more likely to be focused on his education, achieving for himself and the group. In this situation once again, the interest of the individual is not totally subordinated to that of the group, but is integrated into it and enhanced by it.

A small but significant psychological benefit results from having a uniform policy - it removes the need for both parent and child to decide what to wear to school, whereby arguments, stress and anger can be avoided.

There is reason to believe that school uniforms can have an impact on safety in the school environment. Even at the most simplistic level, anyone who does not belong in the school can be quickly identified and checked out. Likewise, any students who ought to be in school but are wandering around the community instead are easily noted.

Most school uniforms are of such a design that it is much more difficult to secrete offensive weapons on the person, and this should result in a lower incidence of students trying to take weapons into school.

In the tragic events at Columbine, the killers (one of whom who had hidden a weapon under his trench coat) were heard to shout "Everyone with a white hat stand up" in an attempt to isolate sports team members as targets.

Many thefts and murders have been attributed to something as simple as envy over designer clothing, and an adequate uniform policy removes that risk at a stroke.

A safe education environment is inextricably linked to discipline and motivation. Students who feel safe are less likely to behave disruptively, are less likely to fear going to school, and have more energy to expend on their studies. School uniform, insofar as it contributes to a safer environment, has an important part to play.
The Principal of South Shore School, Seattle, is quoted as saying "Dr. John German, reports that "this year the demeanour in the school has improved 98 percent, truancy and tardies are down, and we have not had one reported incident of theft." 3

One of the detractors of school uniforms has asked "Are we okay with losing even one child who may quit school if uniforms are mandated?"

One might ask in reply "Is it better to lose one child who may quit school, or seven or ten who may be killed because their dress was clearly and identifiably different?"

Good grade results demand close attention to schoolwork, and in class (at least for testosterone fueled young males) one of the biggest distractions is quite simply young females who are provocatively dressed. Excessively tight or excessively brief clothing on either gender is a distraction which a good school uniform policy can remove, with benefits to all concerned.

Some of those who oppose uniforms in schools suggest that designing and policing uniform policy detracts significantly from the time staff have to perform their teaching function. One of them goes so far as to say "creating and maintaining a new uniform policy would reduce the time spent on instructional improvement
and increase divisiveness, both among staff and between staff and students."

The opposite is, in fact, the case. There is a time input into creating a policy, but the input to that task should involve parents, students and non academic staff as well as teachers. Once the policy is in place, teaching staff do not have to spend time being ´dress police´, deciding whether or not a skirt or a pair of baggy pants is too short, and then having to follow up on the counseling and disciplinary issues that may ensue.

More than ten years on from the US Governments initial attempt to promote school uniforms, the argument rages on. Both sides produce statistics to support their view.

Unfortunately most of the statistics available are flawed in one way or another 'perhaps because the populations use to generate their results, or because of faults in the statistical method.

It has been suggested that there is "No clear evidence that uniforms had any significant impact on improving achievement, only scattered anecdotes."

If these scattered anecdotes came from those in a position to monitor performance, they probably have some substance. Without resorting to pure statistics, let us for a moment consider the British experience. Although there are major cultural and demographic differences between the US and the UK, for the most part we share common aspirations and values, a common language and an ardent desire for our education systems to work well.

The fact is that public schools in the UK have had uniform policies in place for years. The incidence of murder, gang culture, drug use, violent crime, bullying and general indiscipline in UK schools is far lower than in our American schools, and the major difference in the systems is the prevalence of uniform policy. It just works.

Some of the best coastal stretches to fish on can be found along the Garden Route. Plettenberg Bay, Sedgefield, Wilderness, George and Mossel Bay are all excellent examples of coastal fishing spots. The fish you can be expecting to find in this area include Kob, Spotted Grunter, Shad, Steenbras, Musselcracker and in the summer you might even find Bronze Whaler Sharks and Spotted Ragged Tooth Sharks. There are a few other species found in this area as well.

Further east of the Garden Route you will come to the Wild Coast. This is a stretch of about 300kms with some of the most beautifully rugged coastline. There are some excellent spots from where you can go fishing from the coast or you can always hire a boat in such places as East London. The fish species you can find in these warm waters include black and striped marlin, yellowfin and skipjack tuna, kawakawa, king mackerel, queenfish, kingfish, dorado and wahoo.

Fresh Water Fishing

Another option is to find yourself a fishing lodge and take advantage of the local knowledge to get the most out of your fishing holiday. If you are in the Cape Town area then you might find these fishing lodges useful. The Alluvia Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, where you can go fly fishing for Rainbow Trout; the Tides River Lodge in Malgas, you can go fishing on the River Breede; and the Bo La Motte Wine Farm near Franschhoek, which features a dam filled with trout.

If you're in the Johannesburg area, then you could try some of these fishing lodges. If you haven't been to Oahu's North shore then you obviously have never been to Hawaii because that is one of the most well known places in Hawaii. That is where about 90% of most of the big swells hit Hawaii.

On your way to the North shore you will be amazed by all the many views you will have like the pineapple fields and the mountains in the huge background of your view. If you have never been to Hawaii then you need to go.

You just turn onto North shore highway I think and you just go. After that if you are wanting to go surfing or at least go look at the surf you just get yourself on Kam highway and then you have a good view of the surf north or south whichever way you prefer to drive at that time.

The North shore of Oahu is unlike any other place in the world. You have pretty beaches and surf all the time. Let's not forget all the women as well if you cannot find something to do in Hawaii then you just need to stay where you are.

You will see that all the resorts are isolated from the North shore that is because they are trying to keep the North shore as secret as possible and not to let any resorts take over the beaches that they surf everyday. They just do not want any tourists where they surf.

How To Ease Tooth Pain Until You Can Get Into The Dentist

One of the worst things is in life is living with constant pain, especially when it's pain that you can't do anything about. Like dental pain. And sometimes you just can't get to the dentist immediately to have him/her alleviate the pain. So when you have an accident or something happens to your teeth, how can you ease tooth pain until you can get to the dentist?

In order to answer this question, let's go through specific problems you might be having and then what you can do for each one until you can get to the dentist.

o Toothaches: first, rinse your mouth well with warm water. Use dental floss to remove any lodged food that may be causing irritation. If you mouth is swollen, apply a cold compress to the outside of your mouth or cheek.

o Chipped or broken teeth: if possible, save any broken pieces of the tooth. Rinse your mouth with warm water. Rinse any broken pieces that you've saved. If you are bleeding, apply a piece of clean gauze to the area for about 10 minutes or until the bleeding stops. To keep swelling down, apply a cold compress to the outside of the mouth, cheek or lip near the broken or chipped tooth.

o Knocked-out tooth: if the tooth has completely fallen out, rinse the tooth with water. Do NOT scrub or brush the tooth. If possible, try to put the tooth back in place, but be sure that it's facing the right direction. Do not try to force it back into its socket. If you cannot place the tooth back in its socket, put the tooth in a small glass of milk (or a cup of water that has a pinch of salt), or, if you happen to have it on hand, place it in a product containing cell-growth material, such as "Save-a-tooth." Your tooth has the highest chance of being saved if you're able to see your dentist within 1 hour.

o Partially knocked-out tooth: if the tooth has not quite fallen all the way out, leave it alone until you can see the dentist and s/he can properly remove it. Apply a cold compress to the outside of the mouth or check of the affected area.

o Objects stuck between teeth: first, try using dental floss to gently and carefully remove the object. If you can't get it out, visit your dentist. Do not use a pin or any other sharp object to attempt to remove the object. These instruments can cut your gums and scratch your tooth surface.

o Lost filling: as a temporary fix, stick a piece of sugarless gum onto the cavity, or use an over-the-counter dental cement.

o Lost crown: save the crown. Attempt to slip the crown back over the tooth by lightly coating the inner surface with over-the-counter dental cement, toothpaste, or a denture adhesive. DO NOT USE SUPERGLUE!

o Abscess: if you notice a pimple-like swelling on your gum that is very painful, you probably have an abscess. To ease the pain and draw the pus towards the surface, rinse you mouth with a mild salt water solution several times a day. See your dentist immediately.

o Injuries to the soft-tissue: any form of injury to the tongue, cheeks, gums and lips will usually result in bleeding. To control the bleeding, rinse your mouth with a mild salt-water solution; apply a moistened piece of clean gauze to the area and hold for 15-20 minutes; to control bleeding and relieve pain, hold a cold compress to the affected area for 10 minutes; if the bleeding doesn't stop, go to the emergency room and continue applying pressure on the site until you can be treated.

In all cases, you may take an over-the-counter pain killer. Be sure to see your dentist as soon as possible.

White Bay The Soggy Dollar Bar is famous for its 'Painkillers', which were actually first invented here. The original recipe is a secret family recipe. Great Harbor Foxy's Tamarind Bar has certainly changed from the early 70's. Charter vacationers used to listen to true calypso while eating lobster with all of the locals at one long table. It has grown enormously. All kinds of talented local bands and musicians play here. The music and dancing can go on late into the night. Besides the bar and restaurant, there is also a large gift shop with a wide variety of local items, including CDs and the obligatory Foxy's T-shirt. Be sure to bring something personal you can tack to the ceiling, anything from Business cards to hats and even underwear is acceptable. This place is for those who are easily offended , but most people at least stop in and have a drink.

Little Jost Van Dyke 'Foxy's Taboo' restaurant and bar is the new 'in' place. You are more likely to meet Foxy here than at his original bar. Moorings are available, but this can be a rough spot in unsettled weather.

MARINA CAY

Now owned by Pussers, this famous island resort has a bar at the very top of the island, offering great sunset views and live music some nights.

NORMAN ISLAND

The infamous Willie T is an all out party destination with plenty of drinking and wild antics. Expect the unexpected. Not recommended for children or the faint hearted! Pirates Bight offers a more relaxed way to watch the sunset, but also has music, dancing and a very popular Happy Hour with every exotic frozen drink you can imagine.

TORTOLA

At Cane Garden Bay, Quito Rhymer is an extremely popular local musician who can be found performing at his bar/restaurant, 'Quito's Gazebo'. Further down the beach, Al Henley's Big Banana Paradise Club, Rhymers Beach Bar, Stanley's Welcome Bar and Myett's Garden and Grill all offer meals, drinks and live music on selected nights that can be heard from your anchorage spot out onto the water. 'The Pub', below the Fort Burt Hotel, was the original bar in Road Town in The 60's and 70's and is a lively hot spot today. There are bars at Village Cay Marina, Mariner Inn, Pussers waterfront and many other locations in town, but these can hardly be considered beach bars, although many people visit them when embarking and disembarking from their Caribbean Yacht Charter.

Halifax has a lot of water located within its geography. There are many lakes, ponds and resevoirs. Silver Lake borders the town along its western bank. In the west of town are the Robbins Reservoir, Indian Trail Reservoir and Burrage Pond. The Taunton River is part of the border of Halifax and Bridgewater, which also begins the Winnetuxet River and a few brooks that lead into town. East and West Monponsett Ponds are near the center of town. There are two swamps on either side of the Monponsett Ponds. Great Cedar Swamp is on the west and Peterson Swamp is on the east. The town also shares a small conservation area with Plympton.

Halifax is a member of the Silver Lake Regional School District. There are three towns which are within this district, Plympton, Kingston and Halifax. They operate their own elementary schools. Middle school students attend Silver Lake Regional Middle School and high school students attend Silver Lake Regional High School. Both of these schools are located in Kingston.

There are 3 Major Hospitals in close distance to Halifax. Brockton Hospital (located in Brockton, MA) which is about 12 miles, South Shore Hospital (located in South Weymouth, MA) which is about 14 miles and Caritas Good Samariitan Medical Center (located in Brockton, MA) which is about 14 miles.

When you think of warm water, lots of sun and seemingly endless beaches, what comes to mind? For many, it's Hawaii. But there is more to do in Hawaii than sunbathe. Learn about the countless Hawaii adventures that you can have on your next visit to this beautiful paradise destination.

You can explore Hawaii on land, air or sea and take advantage of all the state has to offer.

For hikers, there are fabulous nature trails on every Hawaiian island, including treks for beginners and experts. On Maui, Haleakala is revered as one of the state's best hiking spots. A favorite hike on Oahu is the 45-minute climb to the top of Diamond Head, where visitors are rewarded with sweeping views of Waikiki, Honolulu and the Pacific Ocean. On the Big Island, head to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and take on the Kilauea Iki Trail, a five-mile adventure that begins at the Thurston Lava Tube.

If hiking is not your thing and you would rather pedal your way through Hawaii, you will not be left out. Haleakala offers a downhill ride that is very enjoyable in both exercise and scenery. Then there is the Garden of the Gods on Lanai. This looks like the surface of the moon with very colorful rocks.

If you would like to kayak, head on over to Kauai and go along the Napali Coast for some breath taking views.

Take to the skies and get a bird's-eye view of paradise. You'll find numerous hang-gliding and helicopter adventures on just about every Hawaiian island. You can even go skydiving on Oahu, where a licensed professional will join you on a tandem jump at 13,000 feet. Imagine the adrenaline rush of free-falling 5,000 feet before your parachute opens!

But that's still not all. You can also enjoy camping, windsurfing, whale watching and more. This list just goes on and on. So when you are planning your next Hawaiian vacation, plan on doing something, rather than nothing.

Poipu Beach -- On Kauai's sun-soaked south shore, this is a pleasant if sleepy resort destination of low-rise hotels set on gold-sand pocket beaches. Well-done, master-planned Poipu is Kauai's most popular resort, with the widest variety of luxury Poipu condos. It offers 36 holes of golf, 38 tennis courts, and outstanding restaurants. As companies (and employees) become more reliant on worker knowledge it is important to develop a way to identify the thinking and decision-making patterns required for these different job functions.

Think about it. The majority of your time, do you make decisions with your HEAD, HAND or your HEART?

When you are working with an employee it helps to understand how he can contribute his thinking strengths to certain aspects of the company's needs, particularly as these relate to commitment, helping, adaptability, involvement, and sharing. If we know his strengths we can better assist him by involving him in decision situations that rely on his strengths - we will also understand what type of decision attributes each situation requires - helping to develop a better match.

Try not to assume what employers in the past have by practicing the "pigeon-hole" syndrome, that is, putting someone to a position and not considering their capabilities.

I believe you need to understand this information to help you develop a more effective alignment of the person to the position and to the company.

There are a variety of behavioral assessments in the marketplace that describe a person's behavioral and personality preferences. For our purposes, we will present information from the DISC assessment. There are four elements to DISC -

Hidden Treasure in Nebraska - Seven Places to Search

Nebraska hidden treasure is mostly the outlaw type. Back in the days of the old west it was common to hear or read about outlaws robbing a bank or a stagecoach. Then while on the run from the local sheriff, they would often times bury their loot, and return at a later date to retrieve it. Sometimes the bad guys were caught and hung without revealing where their cache was buried. I know individuals who have located a few of these lost treasures. However, without the proper research into these stories, or any lost treasure story, your chances of finding one are not very good.

The information in this article is a good start for your treasure hunting search. But you may want to research the stories further. Using the Internet, and visiting the local historical societies of the areas the stories revolve around is a great way to research. I use these methods all the time.

Having a metal detector is also a good idea. If you do not own a metal detector, but your thinking of purchasing one, don't spend a lot of money. The detectors that cost between $350 to $450 is all you need. The higher end models with all of the bells and whistles are for the more advanced treasure hunter. Believe me, you can find hidden treasure with a less expensive model. I've been treasure hunting for thirty-five years and the detector I use now, I purchased new a few years ago for $425.

Here are seven areas to begin your search for lost treasures in Nebraska

Scotts Bluff is located 3 miles west of Gering, near the North Platte River.
Near the top of this bluff are caves that were used by travelers through this area in the early 1800's. Many artifacts have been found here. Could their be dropped or buried coins also?

Centoria Ruins is located on the south shore of the Platte River, opposite Kearney. Still visible are a few ruins from this old town. In the past, treasure hunters have located relics and coins here.

Devils Nest is located on the Missouri River, approximately five miles north of Linky. This stretch of land was used as a hideout for outlaws in the early 1800's. Reports of buried treasures here have been circulating.

Mud Springs is located one mile north of Broadwater, on the northside of the North Platte River. A wealthy gambler buried $20,000 in gold coins near Mud Springs.

Mullen is located on county route, 2 in Hooker County.
There is a story of cattle thieves burying approximately $25,000 in gold coins near Mullen.

Seneca is located on county route. 2 in Thomas County.
A miner from California was wounded in an attack by outlaws near Seneca. After his escape from the ordeal he buried $70,000 in gold coins and bullion somewhere on the bank of Middle Loup River, approximately 2 miles east of Seneca. The miner died from his wounds, never revealing where he buried the treasure.

Sidney is located on State route 30, in Cheyenne County.
In 1867, outlaws robbed the Treasure Express Stagecoach of 400 pounds of gold nuggets. They buried the gold on the south shore of the Lodgepole River, approximately 2 miles east of Sidney. Shortly thereafter, they were caught and hanged. The outlaws never
told exactly where they buried the gold. However, some empty bags and two chests were found near the area.

One of six villages in Southampton, this area of the Hamptons has a lot to offer anyone looking for a nice place to vacation. The village was actually one of the first places in the Hamptons to rent places to visitors, starting this practice way back in 1870. Back then it was just room rentals. Filling the need for a place for tourists to stay was brought about by an important event in Westhampton Beach's development - an extension of the Long Island spur of the railroad from New York City reached the village during that time.

The building of bathing houses, a rise in real estate prices and other development began in earnest at that time. Development has largely continued since then right through the present day. Despite a long history of growth and serving an increasing number of tourists, the area still has a nice laid back feel. It is also managed to maintain its small town feel. The permanent population is about 2000 people, with many more people present in the summer.

Many people drive their cars and sit in traffic while coming from or returning to New York City. You can leave all the driving to someone else by taking the train (LIRR), or there is also bus service available. Village Marina and Yacht Basin serves boaters, offering day slips and longer term rental arrangements. You should be aware that if you do arrive by train, bus or boat that it can be a challenge to make your way around the village without a car.

There is plenty to do in the local area, but since the community is situated along the south shore the beach is always one of the biggest attractions. There are a few local beaches that are lifeguard protected during the summer season. If you are renting a home, staying in a Bed and Breakfast or just visiting for a day you can obtain a parking permit and a beach pass to access the beaches.

Many of the businesses in town are located in the central business district. Within town you can enjoy visiting numerous top notch restaurants, a film movie-theater and an arts center that offers live performances. The Westhampton Historical Society maintains a public museum in the historic Tuthill House. They also offer a variety of hosted events throughout the entire year. On a more practical note there is also a supermarket in town and a number of churches: Saint Mark's Episcopal Church, The Hamptons Synagogue and Beach Methodist Church. In nearby Quiogue there is also the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Westhampton Presbyterian Church.

Thomas Mawson died in 1933. "He designed the layout of public parks, perhaps the most splendid was the great inland park at Blackpool which he and his sons designed and developed and which has proved an enormous asset to the town"...quote from the Obituary to Thomas H. Mawson: Journal of the Royal Town Planning Institute: December 1933.

Born at Scorton just north of Garstang, England in 1861. From an early age his interest grew in gardens and planting which would influence his future career. Indeed his practice was based in Lancaster and London where his sons, John and Prentice, worked with their father from the planning stage of Stanley Park, Blackpool and the two crescents and sunken gardens on the Promenade at South Shore, Blackpool. The Park remains, although the sunken gardens were lost when the recent Promenade reconstruction took place with the crescents and their frontage gardens remaining.

From modest beginnings in his father's nursery and fruit farm he achieved a prominent place in the field of landscape architecture and town planning with the courage of his convictions, tenacity and self confidence.

Indeed, Thomas Mawson designed many of the public parks and gardens in England linking landscape and planning, influencing budding architects not just throughout the country of his birth but abroad too, becoming a leading personality in the emerging discipline of town planning and was president of the Royal Town Planning Institute in 1923-4. During this time he produced numerous articles on the subject and often lectured at Liverpool University forming part of the Civic Design course which was initially established by his friend Lord Leverhulme who commissioned him to carry out a number of planning studies in his home town of Bolton as well as his country retreat at Rivington.

Thomas Mawson's reputation in both landscape design and town planning also brought him commissions abroad including the USA, Canada, Greece and submitted the winning design in an international competition of a garden at the Palace of Peace at the Hague, becoming one of the most influential figures of international repute in his field.

In 1926 he published the fifth edition of his encyclopaedia 'The Art and Craft of Garden Making' a reference book containing no less than 20 chapters. 'The Life of a Landscape Architect', Thomas Mawson's autobiography, was published in 1927.

Crocodiles of huge size are plentiful in the Cuban Everglades, as well as a great variety of waterfowl. Some of the streams heading in the swamp afford excellent fishing. Mangrove snappers and tarpon abound in them. The hutia, a tree-going, ratlike animal is found in large numbers. It is several times the size of a rat, and roasts to a most succulent dish. Deer introduced from Europe on the Old Spanish estates are fairly numerous. Boa constrictors inhabit the dry forests of the limestone sections, making their homes in the cavernous rock. Some of these are reported to be of large size. They are harmless, as their normal food is bats. One is sometimes kept as a rat catcher for house and corncrib.

In November and December mallards and blue-winged teal come down from the north, but usually leave by February. The yaguesa, or whistling tree duck, is sometimes seen. Parrots are abundant along the south shore. White and blue herons are plentiful, and egrets are seen occasionally. Mocking birds sing gaily about the shacks of natives living here and there through the rocky areas, and a songster with notes somewhat like the North American wood thrush enlivens the shadowy depths of royal palm swamps. Since much of the region is without economic value, there is opportunity for establishing an important reserve for wild life. The isolation of the interior areas and difficulties of travel combine to afford considerable protection.

To the north and west of the Zapata lies one of the great areas of the famous red soil of Cuba, the Matanzas Red Plain. This region is occupied by one of the most remarkable soils of the world-red soil that shows no visible change from the surface to depths of twenty-five feet or more. The texture of this is finer grained than the average clay of the United States, yet the rainfall, amounting to seventy inches annually, is entirely absorbed, passing downward through the ground. So rapidly does it percolate that plowing can be done within a few hours after heavy downpours. Despite this thorough sub-drainage the soil conserves sufficient moisture to produce fine crops of sugar cane.

Much of this land has been in cane continuously for more than a hundred years, and is still producing. Some fields, which have not been replanted for twenty years, are giving yields of twenty tons of cane per acre without fertilizer. It is difficult to understand how land subjected to ages of leaching, as this has been, retains its fertility. It has but slight stickiness, and is entirely different from clay soil, as known in temperate zones. In the eastern patt of this plain, there is an area of three hundred fifty thousand acres that has not a single stream or drainage depression in it, although the rainfall is heavier than in eastern United States.

Both locations offer handicap access, restrooms, short trails to beautiful vistas, and picnic facilities. Before or after lunch, enjoy a scenic drive and visit Mt. St Helens. It takes about 3 hours to drive from Paradise to the west side of Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, and about 2.5 hours to drive to the east side. Park officials suggest that first time visitors try to schedule a visit to the Johnston Ridge or Coldwater Ridge Visitors Centers on the west side of the monument, to learn the most about the eruption and subsequent changes to the plant and animal life.

5. Olympic National Forest covers more than 633,600 acres and is managed by the United States Forest Service. The National Forest blankets the foothills of the Olympic Mountains and surrounds much of Olympic National Park. Olympic National Forest offers free picnicking at six locations: Big Creek, Coho, Falls Creek, Falls View, Gatton Creek, and Interrorem. Each site offers shelters and tables. Gatton Creek, Coho, and Interrorem offer toilets, and all except Falls Creek and Gatton Creek offer stoves. Each picnic site offers an abundance of activities including hiking, fishing, camping, and boating.

North Dakota

6. Nestled in the scenic Turtle Mountains on the shores of Lake Metigoshe, Lake Metigoshe offers more than 1500 acres. In addition to picnic shelters, complete with bathroom facilities, there is a boat launch and a swimming area. The park offers a number of hiking trails, education programs for the children and plenty of information about the area. Halona Blow Hole - Nature's Precast Manhole

The Halona Blow Hole is like a precast manhole natural fountain located on the south shore of Oahu. It is a natural formation of lava tubes caused by ancient volcanic eruptions. These lava tubes go to the sea, and when the surf is high water is shot up thirty feet into the air above the Blowhole.

The majesty of the Halona Blow Hole is best observed when there is high tide on a windy day, in which spout after spout bursts out from the ocean below. There are many tours which stop at this magnificent sight. The Halona Blow Hole is a fifteen minute drive - or a beautiful stroll - from Waikiki Beach. The lookout at the Blow Hole affords a spectacular view of the coast and the Islands of Lanai and Molokai. In the winter, playful whales can be spotted from here as well. Halona Beach Cove, next to the Blow Hole, is called the Peering Place, and is famous for its resident green sea turtles as well as being the site of the love scene between Deborah Kerr and Burt Lancaster in the 1953 movie From Here to Eternity. Beneath Halona is found the Ka Iwi channel, which is one of the world's most unpredictable and dangerous ocean channels. The waves come crashing against the walls of the narrow bay, which produces high and powerful spouts. It is not safe to approach the Blow Hole; it is best viewed from the lookout. Other nearby points of interest include Hanauma Bay, Sandy Beach, Koko Head Botanical Gardens, and Makapu'u Point Lighthouse.

Halona Blow Hole is but one type of Hawaii precast concrete lava tube cave. On Oahu there are other lava tube caves up to one hundred yards long. The Ka Eleku Cavern on East Maui awaits the intrepid traveler. The well-known Maui Waianapanapa Caves are not true lava tube caves but rather inland littoral caves. Kauai also has several good-sized lava tube caves which are easy to visit. The Big Island possesses major lava tubes on all of its volcanoes with the exception of Kohala. The most extensive in the world is the Ailaau flow field on Kilauea Volcano, and one of its tubes - Kazumura Cave - is the world's biggest lava tube cave (over 40 miles of it have been mapped).

This cave starts outside the park proper. There is an unbroken descent of 1200 yards Both Hualalai and Mauna Loa volcanoes have lava tube caves over 6 miles long). Mauna Kea possesses several short and steep lava tube caves. On the Big Island's dry side there are lava tube caves bearing large deposits of volcanic soluble minerals such as gypsum, thenardite, and mirabilite. There are also many caves in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island, many of which have never been explored, while others - such as Thurston Lava Tube precast electrical vault - are illuminated electrically and are popular tourist destinations.

Halona Blow Hole is just one of the many Hawaii precast concrete lava tubes on the Islands. Some resemble a precast manhole whereas others are huge systems like a precast electrical vault.

Lincoln Rock State Park

Just a few minutes north of Wenatchee, on the eastern shore of the Columbia River, is Lincoln Rock State Park. It is located immediately north of Rocky Reach Dam, which is also a fun and interesting place to visit. There are RV spaces, tent camping spaces, and cabins available at the park at Lincoln Rock. Nason Creek Campground

Daroga State Park

Daroga State Park is located about 30 minutes north of Wenatchee on the eastern shore of the Columbia River. The park has a unique set up, with a portion of the campsites only accessible via a long paved path that goes out over a bridge that separates a small sheltered water area from the Columbia River. There are climbing toys and a swimming area at Daroga State Park and it has a great view of the Columbia River and the high rocky cliffs on the other side.

Lake Chelan State Park

Sitting on the south shore of Lake Chelan, a beautiful 51 mile long glacier fed lake, is Lake Chelan State Park. The park is about 45 minutes north of Wenatchee and to get there a traveler must drive past the community of Entiat and then through the Navarre Coulee. Lake Chelan State Park features both secluded and open campsites, a boat launch, camp store, swimming area, picnic facilities, and a playground.

Alta Lake State Park

A little over an hour north of Wenatchee is Alta Lake State Park. This small park is located near the community of Pateros, just a few miles from where the Methow River empties into the Columbia River. The park features campsites, a camp store, swimming area, boat launch, and more. It offers a wonderfully secluded rustic setting and sits on the shores of two mile long Alta Lake. There is a trail that leads all the way around the lake that is a fun walk and usable by travelers of all ability levels. There is also a golf course nearby that is popular with those that frequent the campground regularly.

The Many Benefits of Taking a Snow Sauna

Have you ever heard of a snow sauna? Taking a sauna is great any time of the year. Especially if it is in a traditional Finnish sauna built out of cedar and it is heated by a wood fired sauna stove. It seems that all the stress and tensions of the day are drawn out of the body by the sun's radiant heat that was stored in the wood that is burning. Once the stove rocks are hot the dry heat reaches deep into your body and drains all the toxins out of it. Then it is time to increase the heat by ladling water on to the stove rocks with a loud hissing sound. As the humidity rises your sweat increases removing all the grime and toxins.

A good traditional sauna is usually situated near a lake or river. When the heat of the sauna is almost unbearable and the toxins are on the skins surface you open the sauna door and head for the lakes cold water. A quick dunk in the water rinses all the poisons from your skin. You are now clean, refreshed and many times drained of energy. Only a snow sauna will make you cleaner and more refreshed.

If it is winter time and you live in the Snow Belt along the Lake Superior South shore you have a great opportunity to enjoy the snow sauna tradition. Winter lasts a long time in these big snow areas where in some years there are still snow banks in the cedar swamps on the 4th of July. Cabin fever is a common problem as the cold and darkness of winter and early spring as the months drag on. The snow sauna is a great way to purge your body and mind of this annual affliction.

In some places like the Keweenaw Peninsula snow starts to fall early. November snow accumulations will exceed the total annual snow depth for many Northern cities. However the snow sauna season usually does not start until about Christmas time. The timing of snow sauna season is linked to the depth of the snow. In general snow sauna season begins when the local snow depth is greater than 24 inches.

A snow sauna begins with a normal sauna. However that is where the similarity ends. Once a good sweat is going instead of heading for the lake to take dunk you simply jump into the clean cold snow. It is important that the snow have a good base especially early in the snow sauna season. Powder snow will not support much weight and your snow flop may end up with a hard landing. It is also important that the area that you are snow jumping into is not covered with rocks, brush, sticks and other hazards. An additional hazard can come from a hard snow crust after the January thaw or during the spring freeze thaw period.

As we said a good snow sauna ends with a good snow jump or flop. After you flopped and covered with snow take care to look upon the area you landed. You will be surprised to see dark deposits in the snow. These are the result of the grime and toxins that were in and on your body prior to the sauna. A true snow sauna enthusiast will make several rolls and flops before reentering the sauna for another sweat. A good snow sauna will make your body feel more alive and clean than it ever has. All the symptoms of cabin fever will be gone especially if you take a snow sauna with family and friends.

Nothing beats a snow sauna for improving your health and well being. You really have not lived until you have run out the sauna door and jumped into 3 or 4 feet of snow.

History

Even before the advent of Spanish rule, Cebu was already a well-developed and prosperous city that enjoyed trade relations with other Southeast Asian countries. On April 7, 1521 the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan arrived in the island. He was welcomed and befriended by Raja Humabon, the king of Cebu. Humabon and his people converted to Catholicism and became the first first Filipino Christians. But the people of nearby Mactan Island were not so friendly, and Magellan was killed in battle by their king, Lapu-Lapu.

In 1562, more than forty years after the death of Magellan, the Spaniards under Miguel Lopez de Legaspi returned to the islands. Legaspi then established a new Spanish colony with Cebu as its capital.

Sights

Cebu City is a major tourist destination in the Philippines. Its best-known landmark is the Cross of Magellan. Legend says that it was erected by the explorer upon his landing on the island. It is sacred among Filipino Christians, who regard it as the symbol of the birth of their faith. In 1835, the local bishop ordered that the cross be moved to a wooden case and guarded in a chapel. This was to protect the cross from being vandalized by devotees who would chip away pieces at a time.

Nearby is the Minor Basilica of the Holy Infant (Basilica Minore de Santo Nino). The church is home to the country's first religious image, the Santo Nino.

Every year in January, the famous Sinulog festival takes place. Originally a dance ritual in which dancers mimicked the motion of the river (sulog), it is now performed in honor of the Infant Jesus.
